CLASS
GIFT
Class
of 1961 Teaching Collegium Chair Fund
For
our 50th reunion, the Class of ’61 is looking to raise $2
million for the Class of 1961 Teaching Collegium Chair. When we
reach the $2 million mark, the Hewlett Foundation will match our
gift with an additional $1 million, establishing a $3 million Chair
for our class.
The
Class of 1961 Chair will be one of 8 – 10 chairs in the Teaching
Collegium. Housed in the College of Letters and Science, these chairs
will be open to distinguished faculty across the campus who teach
within undergraduate major programs. Faculty will be nominated on
the basis of excellence in teaching and research and selected by
the five deans of the College of Letters and Science for five-year
terms.
Membership
in the Collegium will provide faculty with the resources and opportunity
to try out new ideas in the classroom, mentor other professors and
graduate students, and undertake new joint initiatives—in
other words, to play a lead role in enhancing undergraduate teaching
throughout the University. In addition to meeting regularly to collaborate,
Collegium members will:
Explore
and model effective ways to engage undergraduates directly in research;
Engage
graduate students in improving undergraduate education;
Help
departments in their efforts to enhance undergraduate learning:
e.g., through mentorship of new faculty and/or peer review of teaching;
Disseminate
their teaching innovations and insights in additional ways, possibly
through a lecture series and/or workshops.

THE GEORGE LINK '61 MEMORIAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FUND (W-6104)
The
Achievement Award Program (TAAP) is based on need. Both transfers
from junior colleges, one of our scholars has already graduated;
the other will be a senior in the Fall. Students receive $6,000
per year; it requires approximately $150,000 to generate $6,000
per year. To fully fund one student would require approximately
$90,000 more in endowed funds, hence the Alumni Association supplements
our payout from a TAAP general endowment fund (unnamed gifts).
SECOND
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED
The
George Link '61 Memorial Achievement Award Fund Scholar for the
2010-2011 Academic Year is Sandra Nunez.
FIRST
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED
Korina Guzman, from Torrance received
$6,000 in the 2009-2010 Academic Year. $144 of which was contributed
by George's scholarship fund (amount of interest eamed on contributions.)
CAA supplemented the remaining monies from its general TAAP endowment
fund. George's fund will obviously generate more interest in the
future.
THE
CLASS OF 1961 ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP (W-9611)
The
Leadership Award is $2,000 per recipient per year and is based on
demonstrated leadership ability. Established for our 40th reunion,
we originally assisted one student annually (sometimes for the full
four years) and now two. It requires $50,000 to generate, on average,
a payout of $2,000-$2,500 per year.
LIBRARY
FUND
The
University Library, one of the world's great research libraries,
holds a special place in the hearts and minds of Berkeley alumni,
faculty and students. The Library serves as a home for research,
collaboration, and study, whether in the Great Rooms of Doe Library,
the comfortable and elegant Morrison Library, the Free Speech Movement
Cafe, or at one of the specialized subject libraries located across
campus in all the schools and colleges.
In order to continue to acquire, organize, and make accessible new
information, the Library depends on the support of those who understand
how important a world-class library is to the education of students
who will one day shape our future. Your gifts help to preserve,
support, and expand this extraordinary resource for generations
to come.
