SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS

The Link TAAP Memorial: Joanne and Arik

All monies raised for the Link TAAP between its inception through 2011 will count towards our 2011 class Gift. TAAP Scholarships are given to financially disadvantaged students who qualify for admittance to Cal but cannot afford to attend. As of November 10, 2009, the fund has a value of $71,195, including pledges. The goal for the TAAP Fund

is $150,000.

Linda Govan attended the luncheon honoring this year’s TAAP graduates, including our recipient Korina Kuzman. Joanne and Joy encouraged us to attend TAAP Luncheons and, as a class, to keep in touch with the TAAP recipients. We will send congratulatory letters to them upon their graduation.

Class Council members are also encouraged to participate in the pre-award interviews.

Peter Frazier reported on our other sponsored scholarship -

The Leadership Award.  It has been in existence for 6 years.  It is given once a year to a well rounded student has been admitted to Cal. Our class’ scholarship is fully funded at $76,973.

To date our class has participated in 3 diversified program choices:

                 1.  Scholarship programs

                 2.  Library

                 3.  BearBacker Stadium choices

Peter and Bill Ausfahl are chairing fundraising for the 2011 50th reunion class gift. There will continue to be various options.

ALUMNI AWARDS: Joanne

Jane and Jim Wood had nominated Dan Silver for the Alumnus of the Year, supported by several class council members. It had been discussed and then decided not to nominate class member Jerry Brown for the Alumni of Achievement Award this year because nominating just one  candidate per year will carry more weight. Jerry can still be nominated next year and that would not conflict in any way with the state election.

REUNION: Joy and Jim Stonehouse

It will take place on Homecoming Weekend (date TBD) next year. The game will probably at the AT&T Stadium in San Francisco. Although there are more reserved seat ticket holders than seats in the stadium, the class has been given #1 priority and hopefully a block of tickets will be set aside for the Reunion participants. (per Maya)

VENUE COMMITTEE: Joanne

Reunion Party.  The Faculty Club is recommended. It has lots of exterior space in terms of balconies and glades to enlarge its space. It was ½ the cost of the Claremont Hotel or the Claremont Country Club.

Martin McNair has placed the initial reservation. It was decided by the Class Council to select the Faculty Club as the #1 location choice, provided  it will provide adequate space.  JoAnn and committee will continue to investigate.

Hotel:  There was a question about the Hotel Shattuck Plaza as the Reunion Hotel. Rates could be $125  Per night. Despite its great location and charm, it has no gathering spots such as a Lobby Bar.

The Claremont Hotel and Spa was quoted at $199.  It was thought the hotel could go lower.

The Berkely Marina. There is a Double Tree Grand on the Marina. No decision was made on the hotel venue.

The committee will continue its investigation.

CLASS MEMBERSHIP ROSTER: Joy and Arik

Joy said we needed more outreach to find our classmates. King Tuck has gathered several names. There is a  baseline in the Alumni database; Arik said Alumni House and Cal Alumni Association share the same database. Athletics has its own database. Arik will try to help us find our class members in other Cal databases. Joy Maguire will ask Linda Govan and Steve Pace to spearhead the outreach effort.

Send to Arik any members to add to our list. He has 721 members on file and 2750 not on file.

CLASS BANNER

Bruce Kane has suggested we get some professional help. The University will put up the funds until we receive the proceeds or the Council will pay for it. The estimated fee to Design the banner  is $150.

Three preliminary sketches will be done. Karen Malmstrom said she was concerned that the design be about “our” Berkeley, especially if it is done by someone who was not familiar with our campus, traditions.

MISCELLANEOUS:Joy

Should we be thinking about planning something for Sunday?

Pinic? Brunch? Sponsor a Class Lecture?

The group discussed a date for the next Planning Meeting in late September.
